If you are looking for a more strenuous walk, nearby is Merlin’s Hill where you can follow ancient paths up to the site of a large Iron Age hill fort. One of fifteen such forts in Carmarthenshire it dates from around 400 BCE and was probably the site of local power before the arrival of the Romans in 75 ACE.
Though little remains of the fort today the walk does provide amazing views of the Tywi Valley.
Legend says that Merlin lived in a cave on the hill and it is where he was and still is imprisoned. Local folklore used to say that at certain times if you listened carefully you could hear his cries and the sound of his chains clanking.
Whilst there you should visit the Merlin’s Hill Centre with its farmyard heritage centre.
